"An Allergy Alert Service dog would help keep me safe."
My name is Tyler. I am 13 years old and live in Kendall, New York. I was
born with a lot of health problems. The one that worries me the most is my
severe food allergies to milk, beef, pork, lamb, and venison. Basically, I'm
allergic to any animal with hoofs.
My parents have told me a lot of stories about when I was
little and I would eat one of these foods. At first I would throw up right
away. That was good because then I would get the 'poison' out of my body. That
is what milk, beef and pork are. They are a poison to me like drinking bleach
would be to you. Your body just wants to get rid of it.
When I got older I stopped throwing up. My parents thought
my food allergy was getting better but really it got worse. Now when I eat
something I'm allergic to my airways reacts by swelling up. My tongue feels
funny and my throat swells shut. I get very scared when this happens but
luckily my parents have always been there to give me the right medications and
help keep me calm.
Now that I am a teenager I want to go places with my friends
or by myself without worrying that if I eat something I might die. When I go
out to eat at a restaurant I can't always tell if something has milk in it just
by looking at it. Sometimes I will ask the waiter but they usually aren't sure.
One time my family and I went out to eat and my parents asked the waiter if the
mashed potatoes had milk in them. After checking with the cook he came back and
said 'No, just cheese and sour cream'. There are several words that have the
same meaning as milk, like whey, casein and lactalbumin. It would be impossible
to ask if the food had all 34 words for milk. This makes reading food labels
really hard. Even foods that are safe
for me can make me anaphylaxis (the term for having a severe allergy reaction)
because the food has been cross-contaminated with something I'm allergic to.
For example, eating food cooked on the grill can be dangerous. If the same
spatula used to flip a hamburger was then used to flip my food and then I ate it
my airways could close up. Cross-contamination is a big problem for people with
food allergies. Luckily, I have the opportunity to be partnered with an
Allergy Alert Service Dog. The service dog would be trained to sniff out any
food allergens in my environment or in my food and let me know if it is safe.
He would also carry my life saving medication in a special vest on his back. We
would be together all the time. If I did start to anaphylaxis the dog would
sense I was in trouble and get me help. I would be able to go anywhere with my
dog - a restaurant, my friends house, parties. Someday I plan on going to
college to learn how to work with robots or animals. Before I knew about
Allergy Alert dogs I was afraid that going to college might not be possible. Now
I am excited about my future. Please help me and my family raise enough money to buy and
train any Allergy Alert Service Dog. The cost is $7500. I'm hoping with the
help of family, friends and my community we can raise enough money. We are also
holding several fundraisers over the next few months to help with the cost.
